'What A Botheration'- A Roots and Culture Mix

A selection of (mainly) repr
esses that I have acquired over the past few months,
nearly all of it readily available from the usual sources- so go and buy, obviously- compiled
into one mp3 so you don't have to get up every 3 ½ minutes to flip the record over. I'm lazy see?

(apologies for the strange formatting, blogger doesn't seem very happy today)

59 mins 16 secs

Baba Leslie and Mark- 'Black Horns' (Wackies 10”)
Horns alert! Plus added flute improv! One of 3 dubs to Wayne Jarrett's 'African Woman' on this 10”.
Another is in an hour's time.

Carl Bradney- 'Slipping Into Darkness' (White label 10”)
A War cover, produced by Lee Perry. Proper Soul/ Reggae crossover.
All together now- 'Woah, Whoah Woooooahhhh'

Jr Delgado- 'Don't Study Wrong' (DEB Music 7”)

Jr Delgado and Dennis Brown- 'Don't Study Wrong' (DEB Music 7”)
A plea in favour of the power of (the right sort of) education, plus repatriation (never mind).
The Jux/ DEB version attains greatness as they reach for the heights, whilst Sly and Robbie (I think)
propel the tune forwards.

Horace Andy- 'Youths Of Today' (Rockers 7”)

Version

Young people eh? It wasn't like this when I was a lad, oh no. They need the right education, obviously.
A Heavy Pablo production from the late '70s.

Meditation Org- 'Standing On The Corner' (Well Charge 7”)

Version
Pragmatic Rasta call for positive behaviours and unity rather than bitchiness in order to improve the Jamaican
economy. Quite a change from the usual 'burn down Babylon' dogmatism.

Barrington Levy- 'Whom Shall I Be Afraid Of' (Revolutionary Sounds 7”)

Version (Dubplate Mix)
Cultural Roots- 'Mr Bossman (Dubplate Mix)' (Revolutionary Sounds 7”)
Version (Dubplate Mix)

Sam Bramwell- 'It A Go Dread Inna Babylon' (Revolutionary Sounds 7”)
Dub
A wicked set of coloured vinyl 7”s featuring unreleased dubs. As played by Jah Shaka in the '80s. Allegedly.
If not, they're still very heavy.

Rod Taylor- 'His Imperial Majesty' (DATC 7”)
Mikey Dread and King Tubby- 'Dread All The Way'
One of Mr Taylor's best tunes, with a particularly wonderful dub. 'Please sir, would you mind saying that again?'.

Fabienne Mirawada- 'Prophesy' (Fox 7”)

Version

From the vaults of Jack Ruby. It would appear that Ms Mirawanda only recorded a couple of tunes, this one
including the line 'if there is a man to be blamed, let the politician be named/ people heed the call/ our
backs are now against the wall' for starters.

Twinkle Brothers- 'Stomp It Out' (Reggae On Top 10”)

'Stomp it Dub 1'

Norman Grant comes correct over a Barry Isaac production.

Knowledge- 'Everyone Has Their Works' (Stars 7”)
Version

An ace steppers from the group that once provided Dougie Conscious with his first musical nom de plume.

Wackies Rhythm Force- 'Black Africa' (Wackies 10”)

We end (almost) where we started.
