8. the morwels & prince jammy- 'jammin for survival' (trojan)

a nice bit 'o roots to start off. 'lion rock' is a dillinger masterpiece, whilst the jah glen and morwells selections have amazing dubs- a nice place to start, don't you think?

9. michigan & smilie- 'eye of danger' (studio one)

listen out for the faint 'humming' vocals at the beginning of the dub to this. beautiful.

10. tenor saw- 'no wuk pon sunday' (penthouse)

the much missed mr saw says virtually nothing for the first 3/4 of this but then, suddenly, goes off on one of his 'country boy' mythical stories involving a cow, some crows and threats of death. an abstract burial tune.

11. admiral bailey- 'punaany' (jammy$)
12. risto benjy- 'gi mi di money' (jammy$)
13. little john- 'yes mama' (jammy$)
14. josie wales- 'wrong move' (jammy$)
15. pinchers- 'no borrow no gun' (jammy$)

yes its popular and rude (just don't tell non jamaicans/ reggae fans what 'punaany' means, and you'll be fine), but what a rhythm! one of the first 'musical' digital tunes, in that it doesn't follow the 'slowed sown casio pre-set' style of sleng-teng to the letter- bouncy bass and synths that kinda approximate the piano /guitar lines of the previous decade. as a side note, risto benjy sounds like the young yami bolo.

16. tony rebel- 'good instruction' (sky juice)
17. joseph cotton- 'god a work' (sky juice)
18. professor frisky & tony rebel- 'reality' (sky juice)

19. micheal prophet & daddy freddy- 'hypocrites' (living room)
20. hypocrites dub (living room)

prime examples of very late '80s / very early '90s digital reggae- or 'ragga' as some experts might say. tony rebel praises the power of education, whilst on the record itself, joseph cotton's version is miss-spelt as 'god a wok'- religion and chinese cooking eh?
daddy freddy gives a lovely example of fast chat, proving it wasn't just the saxon lot who could spit syllables (as far as i know he is still in the guinness book of world records as the world's fastest rapper-508 syllables per minute, fact fans).

21. gregory isaacs- 'i'm leaving' (pickout)
22. gregory isaacs & tommy trouble- 'love funny' (pickout)

oh gregory!

23. sugar minott- 'goose' (xterminator)
24. sly & robbie, fire house crew 'goose version' (xterminator)

oh sugar!

25. gregory isaacs- 'rumours' (dancehall classics)
26. jc lodge- 'telephone love' (greensleeves)
27. lady g- 'nuff respect' (greensleeves)
28. telephone version (greensleeves)

the first digital reggae record to exude dread? in every sense of the word?

29. lyrical benjie- 'ten plagues' (king shiloh majestic music)
30. shiloh blessing dub (king shiloh majestic music)
31. anthony john- 'creation' (jah warrior)

32. ranking joe- 'tired fe live in the ghetto' (jah warrior)
33. lutan fyah- 'smoke the high grade' (jah warrior)
34. jah warrior- 'higher grade dub' (jah warrior)

dutch reggae in a uk steppers style, followed by uk steppers in a JA one-drop style. confused?
